Seven reasons Blountstown works.
Where north Florida's highways cross and the Panhandle's rivers meet.
A regional crossroads
Three state highways meet in Blountstown. SR 20 runs east and west across north Florida between Tallahassee and Panama City. SR 71 runs from Port St. Joe north to the Alabama line. SR 69 starts here and runs northeast to I-10 and US 90 at Grand Ridge.
On the way to the Gulf
Port St. Joe is about 51 miles south, with Mexico Beach and Apalachicola close by. Beach traffic runs through the county all year, and those drivers are customers for restaurants, convenience retail, lodging and outfitters.
A low cost of entry
Land county-wide averages about $11,400 an acre, and commercial land about $14,000. Commercial buildings trade between $46 and $225 a square foot, and lease space runs about $15 a square foot a year. The average annual wage is $41,723, against $69,492 statewide.
Partners who pick up the phone
The Chamber, the Industrial Development Authority, the City of Blountstown, Opportunity Florida and the Florida SBDC at UWF all work on the same projects. In a county this size, you can meet everyone you need in one afternoon.
Customers who stay loyal
More than 840 self-employed businesses already operate here. In a small town, word of mouth travels fast, and a business that shows up for the community gets repeat customers.
Rivers, springs and trails
Blountstown sits on the bluffs of the Apalachicola River. The Chipola is a 51-mile state paddling trail with more than sixty springs, the most of any river in Northwest Florida. The 3.4-mile Blountstown Greenway follows an old railroad bed.
A downtown coming back
Downtown is being rebuilt one building at a time. The Commerce Building at Pear Street and Central Avenue has been restored and has tenants, Ameris Bank opened a new branch, and Historic Blountstown Main Street has been a Florida Main Street program since 1998. The North Florida Wildflower Festival and Goat Day & Pioneer Day bring thousands of visitors to town every year.
